He made the runway a theatre. This is a show of it.

The form

One dress form stands on every set tonight. Each act dresses it; at the end, its silhouette is the last look.

You've got to know the rules to break them.

Lee Alexander McQueen, as quoted at Savage Beauty, 2011

03 · The cut

A coat is a handful of flat pieces. Cut right, they become a body.

Taken apart

Collar first, then the sleeves, then the body: each piece lifts off the form and lies down where it was cut.

The lay

Every piece is cut twice, left and right, from one lay of cloth. Point at a piece to read it.

Bumster

A model in a frock coat and low-slung grey trousers, seen from behind

Trousers cut so low the waistband sat at the base of the spine. Shown in Taxi Driver, autumn/winter 1993.

I wanted to elongate the body, not just show the bum.

Act I

Highland Rape

Autumn/winter 1995 · London, 13 March 1995

The family tartan, woven thread by thread

K/8 R24 K8 R24 K48 Y/4

A 2/2 twill: each weft thread goes over two warp threads and under two, one step along each time. Where stripes cross, the colours mix.

Highland Rape

His first show for the British Fashion Council, on the Jacobite risings and the Highland Clearances. His ancestors had been cleared.

The title

He said it meant England's rape of Scotland. Drag across the stage to blow.

Act II

No. 13

Spring/summer 1999 · London, 27 September 1998

The finale

Shalom Harlow, a former ballerina, turned on a small platform between two robots borrowed from a car plant.

Black and acid yellow

They woke, looked her over and sprayed the dress: white cotton muslin over a tulle underskirt. He spent about a week programming them.

There was no explanation, there was just a frock.

Shalom Harlow

Hold to spray. The robots follow your hand.

08 · The hand

Look 12 of The Widows of Culloden: a gown of pheasant feathers, each hand-stitched to a ribbon, and the ribbons to a net ground.

Act III

The Widows of Culloden

Autumn/winter 2006 · Paris, 3 March 2006

Culloden, 1746

The last battle of the Jacobite rising, and the women it widowed. The McQueen tartan again, woven at Lochcarron; lace, tweed, feathers. Dedicated to Isabella Blow.

The pyramid

At the end, inside a glass pyramid on the stage, Kate Moss appeared as a Pepper's ghost in billowing chiffon, turned, and was gone. Here the chiffon turns alone.

Move to turn her. Hold to let her go.

After

A standing ovation, rare at a fashion show.

Act IV

Plato's Atlantis

Spring/summer 2010 · Paris, 6 October 2009

Live

Two cameras on robotic mounts ran on tracks across the stage, filming for the screen behind it and for a live stream on SHOWstudio.

The stream

Lady Gaga told her followers that Bad Romance would premiere at the show. The stream crashed.

12 · The Armadillo

Almost 30 cm from top to sole, on a 23 cm heel. Twenty pairs walked, and one more; three models would not.

The last

Plato's Atlantis was the last collection he finished.

The prints were engineered to sit in the centre of the bolt: reptile, moth, jellyfish, the sea seen from the air.
